CHARLIE IS MY DARLING
Production: UK, 1965
Director: Peter Whitehead
Category: Documentary
An early hybrid of cinema-verité, rockumentary and road movie, Charlie Is My Darling lies at the forefront of all these genres with regards to the history of film in the UK. Whitehead went on the road with The Rolling Stones, filming them at several shows and in transit, and went on to collaborate with the Stones on several promotional films, for their tracks “Lady Jane”, “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadows”, and “We Love You” which features a re-enactment of the Oscar Wilde trial with Marianne Faithfull naked under a fur. Whitehead quit film-making in the early ’70s in order to breed falcons in Arabia.
THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF WHEELS
Production: USA, 1966
Category: Documentary
State-of-the-art industrial promotion film, produced by the Petersen Publications group of automotive magazines and broadcast as a CBS TV Special. As well as covering all forms of car racing – from dragsters to the Indianapolis 500 – the film showcases the wild custom car creations of George Barris (also immortalized in Way-Out Wheels, a 1970 set of 36 trading cards) and Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, king of the “monster hot rod”. Shot in super-saturated colour by leading cinematographers Vilmos Zsigmond and Laszlo Kovacs, this is a fetishistic 30-minute blast from the golden age of automobilia. Lick my decals off, baby.
