PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES
Production: UK, 1966
Director: John Gilling
Category: Horror/Zombie
Hammer’s Plague Of The Zombies concerns a voodoo cult at work in darkest 19th-century Cornwall, with the local squire (John Carson) creating a band of zombies to slave in his tin-mines. The film features freshly-disturbed graves, the dead walking the countryside, and the film’s heroine being rescued in a fiery climax from being sacrificed in a voodoo ceremony. An amazing green-tinged dream sequence, showing the blank-eyed zombies clawing their way from the earth of their graves, is the centrepiece of the film and may even have been an inspiration for George Romero’s classic Night Of The Living Dead some two years later.
