A 30-minute episode of the Rod Serling TV series Night Gallery, notable for being the first ever adaptation of a story by horror writer Clark Ashton Smith, a regular contributor to Weird Tales and other pulp magazines in the 1930s and part of H P Lovecraft’s inner correspondence circle. Return Of The Sorcerer, first published in Strange Tales Of Mystery And Terror in September 1931, is a tale set in Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, concerning a man hired to translate macabre and gruesome rituals from the dreaded Necronomicon. The filmed version features Vincent Price, veteran of Roger Corman’s Poe (and one Lovecraft) movie series, which gives it a further air of horror-movie credibility. In 1974 Corman announced a film titled The Grave Is Alive, to be co-produced with British Lion and directed by Curtis Hanson, which was based on three short stories by Ashton Smith, but sadly it was never completed.
