SCHNEEWEISSCHEN UND ROSENROT

SCHNEEWEISSCHEN UND ROSENROT
(“Little Snow-White And Rose-Red”)
Production: Germany, 1955
Director: Erich Kobler
Category: Fairy-Tale/Freaks
Perhaps the most grotesque of all versions of Grimms’ fairytales (this is not to be confused with the same Snow White story that Disney covered), featuring a truly malignant dwarf who is trying to rob two princes of their gold, one of whom he has transformed into a bear. With a soundtrack of weird song snatches to compound its dark elements of freaks and shape-shifting, Schneeweisschen Und Rosenrot is another outré production from German company Schongerfilm, also responsible for Zwerg-Nase (“Dwarf-Nose”, 1953), about a bewitched child with a grotesquely long snout.
