Zulawski’s inexplicable, apocalyptic “fairytale for adults” features the ultimate screen portrayal of female madness by Isabelle Adjani as a disturbed young woman who gives birth to a squamous, octopoid creature and goes on to copulate with it; the film also resonates with extreme psychic and physical violence, grotesquely visceral imagery, allusions to hysteria and other religious disorders, multiple mutilations, murders and suicides, paranoia and doppelganger dementia, and ends with World War 3. Visually stunning and repellent, intellectually baffling and brutal, and altogether quite unique.
