LE VIEUX FUSIL
(“The Old Rifle”)
Production: France/Germany, 1975
Director: Robert Enrico
Category: Nazi/Violence
Enrico was not an exploitation director, but there are enough elements in this film – starting with atrocity as a man’s wife is burned alive by Nazi flame-throwers – to qualify it as being amongst the ranks of the most violent wartime pulps (along with Peckinpah’s Cross Of Iron). The rest of the action plays out like the latter director’s Straw Dogs set in an SS-infested castle, as the formally mild-mannered man hunts down the Nazi killers one by one in a sustained blast of cathartic violence, armed only with his family shotgun (the “old gun” of the film’s title).
