UHAW NA DAGAT
(“Evaporated Sea”)
Production: Philippines, 1981
Director: Celso Ad. Castillo
Category: Island Exploitation/Freaks
The most bizarre of all the films made by “alternative cinema” director Castillo, set on a remote tropical island where three sisters live. This paradise slowly turns to nightmare with the advent of various intruders, most notably a travelling freak show of dwarfs and a deformed, cannibalistic giant. Apart from his customary sex scenes – which here include incest and teratophilia – Castillo also presents disturbing images of a goat sacrifice by naked cavorting dwarfs. The film ends with the island spiralling into murderous anarchy, as reflected by the director’s increasingly frenzied and disorienting edits.
